Senior Researcher; Cluster Coordinator of Urban Resilience Cluster

Alberto Costa’s research focuses on modeling first and solving later, optimization problems arising from various fields.

He enjoys cooking, reading, and learning more about human behavior in his free time. He recently wrote a book combining the latter with optimization, external pagewhich can be found here.

  • 07/2021 Prize “Beale - Orchard-Hays" for Excellence in Computational Mathematical Programming,
    awarded by the Mathematical Optimization Society. Co-winner for a contribution co-authored with G. Nannicini.
  • 07/2015 GECCO Black Box Optimization Competition, our solver RBFOpt ranked 7th/28, and 1st among the open-source software.
  • 04/2013 Prize “Premio Banca del Centroveneto – Oggi… lo studio per domani", awarded by a local bank for Ph.D.
  • 09/2010 “Concours de math_ematiques pour resoudre une _enigme au jeu de pileou face" (mathematical contest about a problem in the game heads or tails),norganized by Pixis RCS Paris A 434 463 055, Xavier Grandsart. Co-winner with Pierre Deligne (Princeton, Fields Medal) and Maher Younan (University of Geneva).
  • 04/2010 Prize “Premio Banca del Centroveneto – Oggi… lo studio per domani", awarded by a local bank for M.Eng.
  • 04/2002 Prize “Premio Europa crocevia di culture e speranze", awarded by Lions Club for the best article in a workshop about Europe.
